Artist's Description

The Technical College was built in 1911 and replaced a building which had a rather chequered career – The Royal Exchange in 1860 that struggled to prospered. It became Toowoomba’s first Grammar School, a private venture in 1867, and in the 1870s was acquired by the Queensland Government as an Immigration Depot where newly arrived migrant labourers and settlers might be accommodated while awaiting employment. It became derelict, and was finally demolished about 1910 to make way for the high school and technical college. These days the building is occupied by a variety of professional office suites.
