Artist's Description

Hugh Oglvey Rowley and Winonna McGaviston were married in Gisborne in 1925.

Hugh, my Grandfather was a shepherd. They were to live in some pretty wild back-blocks as much of the sheep farming land was being cleared from wilderness at the time. Most was land balloted to soldiers who had returned from WWI.

Hugh and Winnona set up house in a canvas tent with no plumbing, electricity or heating. Life was hard to start with especially as the great depression set in and Grandpa worked only for food and shelter.

But they raised 2 kids and they all survived and lived a modest if not comfoetable life.

Winnona died in 1952 and Hugh in 1976
