Artist's Description

These are the Rowleys. The Gent with the white beard is my Great Great Grandfather, Joseph. Next to him is my Great Great Aunt, Tilly. They sailed to Christchurch on the SS Mystery in 1856. Aunt Tilly Wrote a letter per day for the whole trip. Most survive in Gisborne. They record that one Rowley of 3 years old died on the trip and was buried at sea and that another was born on board.

They came from Bilston near Birmingham to escape a cholora epidemic that had destroyed 1/3 of the town’s population.

The bald man in the back row is Great Grandpa Frank. Inaugural principal of Gisborne school. My Great Grandmother is in the white blouse sitting. The two children are my Great Uncles. The little bump in her dress is my Grandfather Hugh.

This photo was taken in about 1898/1900. How colonial to have a family portrait taken outside!

This is straight off the scanner with minimal correction so we can see Uncle Fort’s and Aunt Tilly’s eyes better.
