Artist's Description

Dad was a banker. His favourite Joke was: Why do the Irish call the pound a punt?
We’d all shrug our shoulders and look at each other as though we hadn’t heard it twenty times before. Because it rhymes with Bank Manager! He’d declare. There’d be a long pause while we mulled it over and we’d all laugh as though we’d never heard anything quite so funny before.

Dad was born in Gisborne of English, Scottish and Rongowhakata Maori stock. His family were shepherding at Matawai and my grandmother carried him home from the hospital in a gunnie-sack on the back of a horse, lifting him above her head as they forded rivers. Their first home was a canvas tent with duck-board floors. The only cooking facilities, a dutch over on an outside fire.

But Dad joined the Bank Of New South Wales and was appointed to Ruatoria, A bustling agricultural centre then. And progressed through the ranks to branch manager in several places. Until a heart attack laid him out. Soon after he retired.

I doubt anyone could have a better person for a father
