Artist's Description

Meet my sainted mother Beryl Lillian Rarangi. Now Living in a retirement village in Auckland, She was born in Waikanai. Of Ngatitoa extraction, she was brought up with stories about her Great, Great Uncle Te Raupriha. Her dad, my Grandfather, was a railway electrician and every four years of so the family would up-stakes and go somewhere where new rail tracks were being laid so Granddad could lay build the signal network. Mum ended up in Gisborne where she became a nurse.

My father’s mother was dying of cancer and insisted Mum was to be here palliative nurse. Then she connived and weaselled the two together, figuring my Dad was too shy to get a girl for himself. (I think Mum might have another angle on his passion but it’s not the sort of thing a son needs to hear).

They married on January 26th 1952 in Gisborne. My grandmother, her job done, died the next day.
