Artist's Description

I have never seen, in all my years as a “sky watcher”, anything quite like these end-to-end rainbows, up high in the sky. The phenomenon is called Tangent Arcs, and form when cirrus clouds have well developed columnar ice crystals drifting with their long axes almost horizontal.

The photo was taken from the jetty in Port Orford, Oregon as a Pacific storm was approaching from the south. Mt Humbug can be seen at the bottom-center of the image.

Nikon D700, 20 mm f/2.8 D Lens
f/10.0, 1/400th Second, ISO 200
