Loneliness, a Daughter Named Lace

I failed to recognise you
When you were introduced back then
Not recalling being told of your existence
To medicated to even care
I wonder if you even knew why you were there
Or if you were deluded like me
I knew your mother had her fears
And that she could not even say
That she wanted me there
Or if like me you were completely unaware
I know I lost touch with her
And wasn’t even told
Until I had lost my direction
And another had taken control
Maybe they were just unsure
Of what I might say
It’s a pity that they hide their thoughts
Prejudiced by what they have been told
Stuck on a label that now has been changed
And the fear that they too may have been wrong
It’s a pity that they talk amongst themselves
And leave us wondering alone
I wish I had been better then
And taken the bull by the horn
Held you and told you the things I felt
And welcomed you to my home
Telling them that they were wrong
To have their fears and doubts
That have left me all alone
I hope that you can one day see
That we both have not lost each other
And can bring each other a smile
That can be ours alone
So although we may not see each other
I think of you and try to find
A reason for their stupid lies
That do not serve them well
And I try not to feel bitter
At those that think they know
Any of the things that happened
That have left me without recourse
And I pray that we again have the chance
To speak without the fear
That others jealousies have sown
So smile when you think of me
And know that in love you were born
Even if the twists of fate
Have left us on our own.

Artist's Description

I wrote this in 2000, about an 8 year old girl a friend introduced me to in 1995. I saw a friend and lovers face in the child and immediately thought that she must be my daughter. I could not get the idea out if my head, and still can’t; no matter how often I am told I am wrong.
If you ever try to find children that may be yours, the Human Services Depatment will deny any rights even confirming or denying the children exist. If you ask for the files your enquiries generated you will get a letter denying they exist until you send copies of their letters, to which the response will be " We have dealt with that before."
