Artist's Description

The unusual formations seen on its shores (known as “tufa”) were formed by mineral deposits by underwater springs. Since their formation, the levels of the lake have dropped drastically (mostly due to diversion of incoming water to Los Angeles), leaving the tufa exposed.

Mono lake is also unusual in that the salinity (amount of salt in the water) is 2-3 times that of the world’s oceans. The highly salty and alkaline nature of the lake is primarily due to the fact that Mono Lake has no outlet save evaporation, which leaves behind salt and other minerals.
