Sentry Baboons

Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve

On the tourist route, I was behind another car. It was about 100 meters away from when it suddenly stopped. I stopped quickly to avoid scarring what ever the other man saw.
It was a troop of baboons running across the road. The females were carrying their young on their bellies and backs.

But what I noticed was the way they moved across the road and veld. A few of the older males would take sentry posts watching the troop move, and once the troop were away from any danger they move up. They would take turns, there would be 5 sentry’s and once the troop move past the last sentry he would walk with the troop and take another post a few meters ahead. This process continued until they were over the ridge and out of sight.
