Artist's Description

The fungi photographed here is known as Hexi-pored Polypore…an edible (like chewing HARD rubberbands) that is found mainly in the spring thanx to it’s bright orange caps. The undersides have a FABOULOUS hexigonal pattern to them. Spore print is white….
I often find beetles and larva hanging out with these as they tend to be a favorite munchy for them.
The ‘hairs’ I think are a type of parasitic fungus or mold………or maybe just hairs? lol Not sure there either. The size of this fungi was compairable to that of a pencil eraser.
UPDATE: BugGuide.net has put these in the Genus Ceratophysella, possibly a type of Springtail?
NE Kansas, USA, 4/4/12
Olympus IR-500 in macro-mode. NEVER knock a pocket camera!
Happy Easter everyone!
