Artist's Description

A variety of California Land Snail…I remember these SOOOO well as a kid. I’d collect them and put them in a Velveeta Cheese box, close the lid and forget about them…then remember them the next day and find a mass of GOO and dead snails. It seems they don’t like enclosed heat for hours on end. :o/
Now…they are some of my favorite creatures…ALL snails and mullusks are. Not sure what my facination is with them but something amazing to me that EVERY snail, no matter what species…repeats the same shell design/color…if not exact texture/pattern. They form these by digesting lime, often taken from rocks, bones, other shells………all found in the world around them.
Unfortunately for gardeners…they have a great appatite for foliage as well.
I photographed this back in June of 2011, on a trip back to my home city of San Diego, California. What a FABULOUS time with great new memories.
This particular species is LARGE….I’ve seen them as big as gum balls and have been told they get even bigger.
I collected shells and brought them back with me but left this living creature on it’s plant trying to avoid me.
These are often used in science classes for studies…….I had a few in college that I grew, along with Apple and Mystery snails.
LOVE EM
