Artist's Description

My son’s eagle eye caught this small green caterpillar….thinking it was another variety of sphinx moth because of the tail horn…I photographed it and went home thinking to find a quick ID.
Nope.
Went to BugGuide.net where they told me it was actually the larva to a wonderful moth called a Clearwing Hummingbird moth! How exciting. One of my favorite moths…had never seen or even had an idea what the caterpillar to this species looked like till now.
It IS a type of sphinx moth…but of a whole different look. When an adult, this moth will hover over food plants like a hummingbird…..has colors like a bumblebee and has clear wings with thick black outlines.
Yeahhh…new find for the year!
