Artist's Description

The Green Stink Bug…..or Green Soldier Bug, Acrosternum hilare is one of the very first insects I can SEE once spring comes in.
I photographed this one and several others on Feb.20th…well before it’s normal arrival. Hoping this won’t be a bad sign of things to come.
Wikipedia states:
“It is found in orchards, gardens, woodlands and crop fields throughout North America, feeding with their needle-like mouthparts on the juices of a wide variety of plants from May until the arrival of frost. Adults develop a preference for developing seeds and thus become crop pests (tomato, bean, pea, cotton, corn, soybean, eggplant). When no seeds are present, they also feed on stems and foliage, thus damaging several fruit trees, such as the apple, cherry, orange and peach trees.”
The young are a lot more colorful…with black, white and reds in the patterning.
An extremely common insect here in the US…and also found around the world, probably thru accidental introduction.

The image above shows 2 seperate insects…taken on the same day as the posted image.
