Artist's Description

My son about had a heart attack today…..as did I!
We were walking along a road near a woodchip pile…he decided to hop along the top ridge while I looked for bugs and mushrooms. All of a sudden he hopped in the air, squealed, yelled RATTLER and RAN! His first Timber Rattlesnake…
I freaked out so bad that he could have gotten bit…….then we both calmed down and I approached it to see if it was an ‘old’ friend of mine from Saturday. Nope…this was a new beauty.
He was damaged in his right eye but was EXTREMELY calm…never got aggressive…never rattled that tell-tale tail….a splendid fellow!
Kinda scary knowing this is 2 in less then a week! also they were located very close to each other…soooo…..Might have to stop the hiking in this area for awhile.
Lesson 1:
Don’t run if you see one…….STOP…FREEZE….LOOK! Just in case this was a female birthing babies…the young will be even more potent as their venom is less diluted and they’ll hit you with ALL of it.
Also…what if it were a male figting another male? Or a male and female about to mate….ALWAYS CHECK THE AREA FIRST IN CASE THERE’S MORE before stepping away or running!
Lesson 2:
They don’t want to play. No matter how much you might want to.
These are snakes that even if the heads are chopped off….can still envenimate a target several hours later.
Lesson 3:
This is a threatened species. If you’re caught killing one? It’s a heavy fine. Just leave it alone if possible. Or call someone who can handle them to get it away to a safer living place. Don’t kill an animal because of your fears……..you may kill off an entire species.
(The Butterfly Effect….look it up!)
