Artist's Description

A woody fungus eater…the Horned Darkling, or Forked Fungus beetle has gone thru a lot of recently updated history.
At one time it was believed that once they finished eating their host…they’d just die off. However in recent years it was discovered that they actually will fly to a new host.
The males have these horns…the females don’t.
On my fellow here he was hosting some friends of his own. Some kind of mite between his forehead horns have taken residency. If you can imagine……….the length of this beetle was about 1/2 inch or 1 1/4 cm? So figure how big the mites were!
He and a bunch of his friends were found underneath an Artist Conk polypore fungi. First time I’ve ever seen these.
