Artist's Description

Located on Liberty Island (formerly known as Bedlow Island), situated in the New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty is an icon not only for New York but the nation as a whole. Given to the US as a token of friendship by the people of France in the 1880’s , she was the creation of Frederic Bartholdi who designed her face to resemble his mother’s.

Representative of Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom who was worshipped by the freed slaves of ancient Rome, the statue has many symbolic gestures. Her 7-spiked crown/halo marks the sun, 7 seas & 7 continents; the torch denotes, progress; the tablet evokes the law; her raised foot speaks of forward movement ,while hidden partially in the hem of her gown a broken chain attests to the defeat of oppression.

Elevated on a stone base, her figure shows as a triangular shape which stands 151.1 feet high and weighs 450,000 pounds.

Closed post 9/11 for reasons of safety and security, the statue is once again open to the many thousands of sightseers who venture here per day. There is some anticipated construction due to be done in 2011.
