Artist's Description

This is the first photo I took in what will eventually be probably a long series based on the book Deerskin by Robin McKinley. It is possibly my favorite book ever, and has had a big impact on my life.

Deerskin is a retelling a strange, creepy old fairy tale which Robin McKinley reimagined into an incredibly beautiful tale of surviving incredible wounding and the process of working into healing. And there are lots of fleethounds, an imaginary breed of dogs which I deeply wish were not imaginary. The story follows the princess Lissar who has to flee her homeland with only her dog Ash at her side. The wounding she and Ash received nearly kills them despite their best efforts to overcome it, and in the most desperate moment, the Moon Woman goddess comes to Lissar and helps her plight. The Moon Woman changes Lissar’s black hair to pure white, gives her a white deerskin dress and changes Ash’s short, fine fur into a long, thick, curly coat. Lissar awakens from her encounter with the Moon Woman, the world suddenly spring after an endless winter, her looks completely altered and her physical wounds healed. As for her emotional ones… that is another story. This photo is based on that moment just before Lissar and Ash wake to discover their new appearances.
