Artist's Description

Rajasthan in India is one of the driest states in the country, if not the world. Water, understandably is even more precious in Rajasthan. While the cities have running water supplies, in the villages the village well is the source of water. Every morning women from the village and nearby hamlets come to the well for the family’s drinking water. They sometimes come from long distances, on their own, in pairs, in groups carrying this precious drink back to their families. I visited a village well one morning and spoke with the women and drank from the well, quenching my thirst in the heat…and I wondered about the distance they have to walk back, carrying the heavy pots, in the heat. But they said that they chat among themselves, catch up on the latest news and gossip and the walk back to their homes is not too bad. They were optimistic and kind and hardworking, they tried not to think of the heat, the desert, the cacti, the dirt trails…I captured this photo of the them in the heat of the moment.
I like this shot as the lady in the middle has her face veiled and the other two ladies have such different expressions on either side of her.
