"Hands-On-Collage: Sargent Style

Hands on Collage: Sargent style: For Anna and Frannie and anyone else to try.…

Okay, now it’s time to choose the size of the collage you want to try. I would advise you trying several small and simple collages in order to get a feel for the medium. You could do them all simultaneously if you want. How about several 8”x10” or 11” x 14” for starters. You could use some any old kind of cardboard. If you get a winner on cruddy old cardboard you’ll kick yourself, because it won’t hold up to the test of time. Why not buy a tablet of acid free bristol paper as thick as you can find it. It usually comes in standard sizes. (Standard sizes are the cheapest to matt and frame) Also if you aren’t one hundred percent successful with your first efforts you can save the parts you like to use in other col

Selling your Art: part 3- Finding a Show Venue

When an artists finally decides to sell his/her art they have to look for venues in which to do this. Fine Artists have several choices.First, you can place your work in a gallery. The gallery approach means the artist has little or no exposure to the public. They are expected to show up for the opening of their show and after that the gallery expects to do all of the work. For their services galleries take a fifty to sixty percent commission on all sales that are made during the show. If an artist needs to make a certain amount of profit on a painting then the gallery percentage is added to the price which makes the artwork twice as expensive as the price the artist requires. Secondly, if a gallery is in charge of your painting they are also in charge of where and how to hang your wor…

Selling Your Art, Live: Part 2-Identifying Your Buyer

Part 2: Identifying Your Buyer:
This is the part of Art Selling where you get to hone “People Watching” into a fine art form of its own. Once again using information shared by artists who took the selling workshops I began to observe every person who came into my display. I was mentally measuring each person to a set of criteria presented to me by theses artists.
They explained to me that although you meet hundreds, sometimes thousands of people wandering through an Art Fair, you could take all these people and divide them into four loosely knit categories. Along with watching people for their body posture and negative and positive gestures, there are certain personality traits that suggest to an observant artist the best way to approach a potential buyer. Once you become adep…

Selling Your Art, Live! ( Three Parts)

PART 1: Selling your Art on a One to One Basis
Some of my friends on Red Bubble have told me that they are about to attend a Charity Show where they will be showing and trying to sell some of their work for themselves and to benefit the charity. I spent quite a few years showing and selling my artwork personally. During the course of those years I learned a great deal about the art of selling. I learned from some fellow artists about a lady from Hawaii named Zella Jackson who was a person that helped galleries learn how to increase their sales. At one point she was invited by a Bay Area Art Fair Promoter to offer a symposium at one of the local hotels on Selling Art. She directed this symposium towards the artists, themselves. I was teaching art and unable to attend, so many of my a…
