Artist's Description

The Perentie (Varanus giganteus) is the largest monitor lizard or goanna native to Australia, and fourth largest lizard on earth. They are found west of the Great Dividing Range in the arid areas of Australia. They are not a common sight on account of their shyness and remoteness of much of their range from human habitation, however, it has happened to me a number of times that these lizards are not scared at all of human presence. They move off slowly and give the impression that you better don’t mess with them, sticking out their tongues like a snake. I came across this one on a mining site on top of a bund around a water tank. It was probably trying to get one of the Long-nosed Water Dragons that were taking a bath in the rain water that had accumulated in the bunded area. It moved off gracefully…
