Having just roused himself, darkness was just beginning to fall as we came across this male cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus). Although definitely diurnal in their habits, they will choose to lie up in a shaded location in order to beat the heat of the day, only venturing out once the heat has broken.
Males demarcate their territory by deficating and urinating around its borders. This gives both visual and scent warning to other males that the territory is occupied and by extension, the females of the area already claimed.
