A young elephant (Loxodonta africana) forces his way through the crush of giants in his effort to leave a watering point. Elephant interaction between each other and between family groups is typically social, laid back and generally non confrontational. Each individual knows their place within the group and every family grouping is aware of their status and standing in the overall picture.

However when conditions become dry and water scarce, desperation for the limited water resources often causes them to display unusually aggressive behaviour towards each other. In times like these, it’s the young in particular who suffer as they are pushed aside in the rush of adults to get to the water.

This young elephant has been caught in the crush and has sadly had his leg broken in the process.
