Artist's Description

Against the backdrop of the Karansberg in Tswalu game reserve, this family grouping of hen, male and ostrich (Struthio camelus) chicks head down the road on the never ending search for food. Extremely vulnerable, the chicks really have no defense against attack apart from the efforts of their parents to distract attackers, and so attrition is extremely high. The largest of all birds, these flightless behemoths can reach speeds of 70km/hr and have an incredibly visious kick that is powerful enough to kill a lion.

Tswalu game reserve, South Africa.
