Artist's Description

Worldwide, there are 36 different types of dolphins living in our oceans and seas, from the well known Bottlenose dolphin to the New Zealand dolphin. Dolphins are some of the smartest and most beautiful animals in the world, and are often studied and marveled at for both of these reasons.

However due to this, there are an outstanding number of dolphins suffering in captivity throughout the world. Of the 36 different types of dolphins, the number of Bottlenose dolphins in captivity alone is currently in the high hundreds. These animals are trained to do tricks through methods of food deprivation, and are boxed into small tanks after they spend hours performing half out of water. To make matters worse, did you know dolphins are endangered?

In relatively recent years, the Baji or Yangtzee River dolphin has gone all but extinct due to the building of river dams and boating traffic through their natural habitat. Currently the rarest of dolphin species, the Maui’s dolphin, is on a fast track to extinction as well, mostly due to entanglement in man made fishing gear that pollute their homes in the water. Though it is contested, the amount of plastic pollution seen in the Great Pacific garbage patch is also a rising threat to the once believed stable population of Bottlenose dolphins.

It is important to remember that while we love these creatures, they too deserve their space in the world, untouched and unpolluted by human hands. In addition, while some believe that placing these animals in captivity may increase their risk of surviving, what would help most is not sheltering the animal from the problem we have created while it continues to persist, but rather to clean up our act, and give these beautiful animals the time they need to populate their natural habitats once again.

If you would like to help fight this rising threat to the world’s dolphin population, first educate yourself on dolphins and their endangerment in the world today, then go out and make your dream a reality!

This piece is inspired by and dedicated to a fellow dolphin fan, and good friend of mine. Thank you for all of your help in making this!
