Artist's Description

Best viewed large

Rochester Cathedral, as it exists today, was begun in 1080 but suffered a serious fire and the nave was completed in 1132 in the Romanesque Early Norman style as can be seen in most of the columns and arches. The pointed arches were added later in the Gothic style in the 1200’s and the clerestory windows added in 1400 when the Great West Window was installed. The West Wall contains the names and conflicts of the fallen of the Royal Engineers and the window depitcs characters of the Old Testament and Saints with military connections in unison.
