Artist's Description

Banded towers of churches in North Kent appeared in the 15th Century and combined the local flint with ragstone from quarries near Maidstone. St Mary’s Newington is a prime example of this architectural curiosity.

Newington also features a ‘Devil Stone’ by the gate. A Sarsen stone bearing a foot sized depression is said to have originated from when the Devil tried to climb the tower to steal the bells and fell landing on this stone and another (now gone).
