The route of pilgrims one foot and knee over nearly 850 years has caused the wear on the steps to the South Quire Aisle at Canterbury Cathedral.
The steps lead ultimately to Trinity Chapel where a shrine once held the mortal remains of Thomas Becket, outspoken Archbishop and Saint where thousands have trecked over the centuries to pay homage and receive healing.
A sedate gallop performed by the pilgrims on horseback along the trackways was known at the Canterbury Gaite and now is established in the equestrian world as the ‘Canter’.
