Ancestors of the American Sweet Gum tree have been found in Tertiary-aged fossils in the continental United States and Alaska. This lakeside sweetgum tree is adorned by dangling spiked woody fruit capsules and a layering of Purplepore shelf bracket fungi on its trunk .
