Artist's Description

Acrylic on hardwood panel with stiffened string and paper and metal foil details. 60" h x 36" w on 2" deep cradled hardwood panel with black painted sides.

Sentry No 1 is one of a pair of related paintings that function as standalone pieces but can also be combined as a diptych. It is part of my ongoing series of trees.

The tree trunk was created using different types of paper and string soaked in an acrylic stiffeneing medium. these strings and paper strips were twisted and woven around one another in layers to create a highly textured three dimensional “wood pattern” that is at the same time very light and airy.

Some of the leaves were painted onto the canvas and some are paper soaked in stiffening medium and carefully sculpted onto the canvas. the juxtaposition of painted and sculpted forms lends added dimension and enhances the transformative use of paper in the piece.

Metal foil was used to selectively gild some of the painted and sculpted leaves. the foil sparkles in the light and similates sunlight. Metallic paint was used to unify and enhance the effect (metallic paint is less reflective than foil, but still lends sparkle and matches the mass tone of the foil)

The background was painted in using different degrees of impasto and raking versus carefully blended and shaded brush painting.
