Artist's Description

Hand-drawn, no computer. Pigmented ink and india ink with metallic paint on archival acid free paper/polymer composite. 20" h x 16 " w.

I’ve wanted to do some Chemical series drawings for a while now. The challenge for Alkanes and their Friends was in coming up with an approach to representing atoms and bonds. I wanted to let both three-dimensional molecular structure AND the graph structure of bonds act as major ideas in the drawing style. The solution I came up with is a bit different from most of the ways chemical structures are represented in the literature. However the style still draws from well-known and recognized ways to represent molecules. These structures should be easily “read” by any chemist or Chemistry student.

The grouping of molecules contains a number of alkanes, related alcohols, acids and an ester plus an H-bonded chain of water molecules. The particular molecules depicted make the title a bit of a lie – while chemically related, many of these molecules are immiscible. Hence not really “friends”.
