Working small really draws attention to the paper fibers and structure of the substrate as well as the chemical properties of ink (or paint or whatever the piece is made with). In this case the color was applied with Prismacolor art marker to the back of the paper. A single layer of color will bleed through in a mottled area on the front, with white left in a pattern that reflects the fibrous properties of the paper. Subsequent layers of color force the previous layers to the front of the paper. The result is softly mottled and blended areas of color that do not oversaturate as easily as direct application of marker color to the front. There’s also no abrasion to the front of the paper, so the fine lines go on crisp.
