Artist's Description

One of New Zealand’s favourite birds – the Tui – has quite a dark side to its nature. During the nesting season the Tui will see off all comers including the Indian Mynah and often can and does kill birds in its territory. I have known them to kill Kingfishers – the Kingfisher is a short flight bird and the Tui will chase it and when it tries to land, will harass it into flight again until it becomes exhausted and drops. Then the Tui finishes it off !
Last year our resident male Tui of the pair we have nesting in a large Totara tree, just at the back of the house, killed a young female Sparrow right in front of me, very sad but there was nothing I could do.
This photograph was taken of the male Tui hiding in the foliage of his nesting tree, checking out the new bird feeding station I have erected. The pair now pay occasional visits for a free feed but come nesting season again and it will be back to the ’ Dark Assassin ’ days !

Location – Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

Panasonic, LUMIX – GH2 at 300mm, 100×300 lens, 1/200, f/5.6, iso 1250, Manual, From a single RAW image.
