These natural hot springs on Great Barrier Island, New Zealand were in the bed of a stream running across the centre of the Island. The first set of springs entailed a forty five minute walk from the Whangaparapara Road and a further forty to the second set. By walking along the side of the stream you could pick your size of water hole – from a foot deep or one like this in the picture at five foot deep. The temperatures varied from place to place so it did pay to dip your toe in first as they could be quite hot. The early Maori’s used these for therapeutic benefit.
This is our German Shepherd Kristy enjoying one of the cooler pools – she didn’t really care how hot or cold it was as long as she could swim in it ! She also loved the beach, even in the middle of winter !
The volcanic activity on the Island also produced the gold, silver and copper mined there back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Pentax 30n 35mm film SLR camera. Scanned and digitised.
