Artist's Description

This photograph was taken the day after an horrific storm and flood hit the Island. This Holden ute was swept down a stream and under the road bridge to finish up on the foreshore. But it wasn’t alone – a caravan followed it under that bridge ! In fact, it’s the water tank from the caravan sitting on the back of the ute !
This storm was before the road outside our shop was sealed – the whole of the road gravel came down the hill and ended up deposited in the front garden and entranceway to the store. There was at least two truckloads.
I tried moving it with my tractor and trailer but boy, was that hard work so I ended up putting a notice on top of the pile of gravel stating ’ Free for removal.’ It had all gone in four hours ! This storm also flooded the cafe at the shop – luckily the shop itself was built higher and escaped any damage. Not so the storeroom, workshop and generator shed, they were left with a foot of silt covering the floors which had travelled under the shop.
One sad incident, there was no loss of life although some people were very fortunate but a dog that was owned by a good customer of ours went missing and his body was found three days later, caught by its collar and drowned.

Pentax – 30n 35mm film SLR, Print scanned and digitised.
