Another from the Great Barrier Island series – this is ’ Sealink ’ leaving Tryphena, a passenger and vehicular ferry run by Subritzky Shipping and it was certainly the vital link. Every Tuesday it arrived ( weather permitting ) with all the cargo for the shops and other businesses. On Friday night it would arrive with passengers and vehicles and again on Sunday to take people back to the mainland. The trip used to take four hours on a good day, crossing the Colville channel between Coromandel on the mainland and the Barrier – it could sometimes be one of the roughest stretches of water in new Zealand.
Sealink carried 150 passengers and twelve to fourteen vehicles, both trucks and cars.
When we sold our shop I was offered a relieving skippers job on the vessel but turned it down as all I wanted to do was retire and go fishing.

FUJI – S5000 at 8.4mm, 1/680, f/6.3, iso 160, Manual.
