The view from the right hand cockpit seat of Claris Airfiled on Gt. Barrier Island, New Zealand. The aircraft is a Britten-Norman Islander belonging to Gt. Barrier Airlines. Whichever of the two runways are being used that day, it’s either up hill or down hill as can be seen. The approach from this photo is across Kaitoki Beach and the high point ahead is the 398 mtr high Te Ahumata peak or locally referred to as ’ The White Cliffs ’ due to the fact that the quartz in the rocks glistens in the sunlight during the early morning. It is an approach that you don’t want to abort at the last minute and try and go round again as can be seen, it would mean a steep climb out !
These aircraft carried our ice cream, bread, milk and newspapers daily when we owned the shop and if the weather was inclement people just had to wait until the plane could fly.
During medical emergencies they were fantastic, coming when needed if the rescue helicopter couldn’t make it for some reason. At night, locals would line the edges of the runway and shine their vehicle’s headlights to guide the plane in.

FUJI – S5000 at 5.7mm, 1/450, f/5, iso 160, Manual.
