This is the ’ Snimos King ’ a heavy lift ship delivering the first of three container cranes to Auckland, New Zealand. I took this photograph just after I had put the Pilot aboard from the ’ Akarana ’ – Auckland’s then Pilot Boat.
I followed with interest the unloading of this crane. Both the tides and the ability of this ship to pump large amounts of water in or out of its ballast tanks to raise or lower the level of the ship, were used. Once the level was achieved with the level of the wharf, the container crane was moved sideways from ship to wharf where rails had been permanently fitted into the deck of the wharf to permit the crane to move along the wharf during its life loading and unloading container ships.
The ‘Snimos King ’ was later converted into a massive crane ship and re-named ’ Saipin 3000.’
