Artist's Description

Whoever coined that phrase never stood down wind of a funnel like this ! When I was relieving deckhand on this vessel it could get a bit hard to breath – have you ever stuck your head out of a railway carriage window when an old steam engine is pulling it ?
This great old funnel belongs to the steam tug William C Daldy, a one time Auckland Harbour Board tug built in Scotland and sailed out to New Zealand in 1935. She came via the Suez canal and re-coaled in Aden. I spoke to an old fireman who was on her maiden voyage, he said there were sacks of coal piled high on all the decks and even in some of the cabins. She is now run by the William C Daldy preservation Society and kept in beautiful condition for trips around the Auckland Harbour and Hauraki Gulf. The price they paid for her was one dollar.
