Artist's Description

Tui ( Prosthemadera Novaeseelandiae ) This is the male of a pair who have visited our flowering cherries for three years. The cherries have just about finished flowering so it will be three or four months before we see them this close again when the flax bushes begin to flower. Characteristics:
Slightly bigger than the blackbird, prominent white tuft on throat and white patch on wing, Middle of back is dark brown, otherwise black with variable metallic sheen. Loud whirring of wings, especially when taking flight. Feeds on nectar, fruits, berries and insects. Forehead is often pollen stained.
The Tui is New Zealand’s foremost native bird after the Kiwi.
