The Kaka beak ( clianthus ) is the only species to occur in new Zealand. It is among the rarest of native plants to occur in the wild, but it’s popularity ensures preservation in gardens. Clianthus was one of the few ornamental plants cultivated by the pre-European Maori, who held the beautiful flowers in high regard.

This one was a gift to us when we moved here. This has grown from a wee plant into quite a large shrub.

Location: My garden, Warkworth, north of Auckland, New Zealand.
