The Stag Horn Fern also called Elk Horn Fern ( botanical name: Platycerium Superbum ) is a native of Australia. It grows on the trunks of trees.
My mystery photo is of the fibrous casing at the base of the fern which comprises the roots and gathers water and debris which becomes mulch for the fern. This one is in my garden and has thrived for many years without any attention apart from an occasional chopped banana skin !

Location: My garden, Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

Panasonic, LUMIX – GH2 at 20mm, X- PS 14×42 lens with MACRO CONVERTER, 1/100, f/8, iso1250, manual. From a single RAW image,cropped.
