Gairlochy Lock takes you from Loch Lochy to the Western Reach which is a narrow canal leading down to Fort William at the western end of the Caledonian Canal in the Highlands of Scotland.
This canal was built by Thomas Telford, started in 1803 and completed in 1822. It allows smaller vessels to pass from one side of Scotland to the other without the dangerous trip around the northern tip of Scotland. It includes Scottish icons such as Loch Ness.
We were waiting for this yacht, flying a French flag, to enter the lock while on our weeks holiday from Inverness to Fort William and back on a hire launch.
