We haven’t seen the male or female adult Tui ( Mr Nasty alias the Dark Assassin or his lady ) for some time but the large Totara tree which was home to them has been taken over by a much younger Tui ( sex undetermined as yet )
This could be an offspring of the older Tui – we have also been lucky enough to attract another even younger Tui. This photograph is of the youngest one. As you can see in the photo, it’s white neck ruff is barely formed and it’s plumage rather untidy and patchy in colour. This will change as it ages.
This Tui has not gone near the sugar water but will always make straight for the orange.
Come breeding time and we will soon see what sex these two youngsters are as a male will not tolerate another male in his territory.

Location: My garden in Paihia, Bay of Islands, New Zealand.

Panasonic LUMIX GH2 at 300mm, 100×300 lens, 1/1000, f/8, iso1250, manual. From a single RAW image.
