Lonely Man

David had met Selina in a trendy, dockside wine bar in Bristol 13 years ago. It was not quite love at first sight but he felt different about the 28 year old blonde beauty with a smile that lit the room. She, like him was alone and by the look on her face in need of come friendly company. Needless to say he made polite small talk with Selina that soon blossomed into a loving relationship.

Selina kept her emotional distance from David, not wanting to be hurt by someone more experienced and worldly wise; but after a few months of his beguiling charm they were deeply and madly in love.

Time passed by quickly and the two lovers were married at Chepstow Methodist Church in 1997, where Selina had been christened as a child; the very place their two children were also christened a few years later.

Oh those glorious days, the happy, simple times before David had taken on that career move from telesales into the ‘snakes and ladders’ world of Business Consultancy. He knew only the toughest survived and he quickly had gained the knowledge how to survive longer than most.
Within 6 months he was head of his Company’s international department and spending more and more time away from his beloved family. At first it was distressing, living out of a suitcase, seeing Selina and the kids only every other weekend. Then along came Dolores, the beautiful Latin PA from their Florence office. All thoughts of home and those who were most precious to him were discarded like an old, worn out coat – comfortable at the time but not what he needed to keep him warm any more.

David’s life was turned upside down, a new world of deceit and passion, a world that was about him, his lusts and his single minded drive to satisfy them.
Before long, with Dolores helping him, he had built up a portfolio of wealthy clients ready, willing and able to turn a blind eye and accept a complimentary gift or two if it meant large sums of money would change hands. Extortion his new found love and all consuming passion.

David’s life in Bristol was something to be used as a crutch, a kind shoulder to lean on when the fast pace of his illegal and devil may care attitude got the better of him, however Selina, Jemima and Oliver were just unsuspecting players in his complex web of deceit.

The shit hit the fan, big time when Selina had rung him at the Palazzo Magnani Feroni. Why was David staying at the luxurious 5 star hotel off the Ponte Vecchio area of Florence, when he was supposed to be managing in his Bed and Breakfast style accommodation his Company had insisted he used? Why had Dolores, David’s new PA answered the phone from his Palace suite?
David flew home that weekend to Bristol and confessed everything to Selina. She was distraught and angry at his sheer guile and the stranger that she once thought she knew. There was no more to be done but end this marriage of convenience, this safe haven for the evil monster she had once loved.

Within 3 months, David and Selina were divorced and he left all he had in England to his once cherished family. David moved permanently to Italy, continuing his playboy lifestyle with Dolores and the fraudulent actions that brought all he desired. His love of powerful opulent cars and life in the fast lane was his to be enjoyed to the full.

And now at a junction in David’s existence, all the excitement had ended. Dolores had left him and he was once again alone. The spinning carousel that had consumed him had stopped and he badly wanted to get off. He knew his only chance of regaining normality would be with his previously unwanted wife and kids, a life that was so pure and simple. He would turn over a new leaf and plead with Selina to give him another chance.

David had been phoning the kids most weekends while in Florence and they told him about life in Bristol, the cold, the constant rain and how mummy was so lonely. He knew things could work again for them, that somewhere in his sinful soul was the guy Selina had once loved.

He knew this weekend he must implore his former wife to help him turn everything around, to atone for his selfish past.

When David dialled her number, the phone had barely rung before Selina picked it up in an excited and friendly voice he had not heard for almost a year. He felt in his heart “she is missing me as much as I am missing her”. Before he could say much, she put Jemima on the phone; she too was all excited and garbled all manner of tales about who was her best friend at school, how it never stopped raining in Bristol and how she had loved her trip to the Ice rink last week. Seconds later his 5 year old son Oliver snatched the phone from his elder sister and bellowed down the phone, “Daddy we are all excited, Uncle Jerry took us to skating last week and he bought me & Jem cheeseburgers and coke, and he bought mummy the biggest, poshest ring you have ever seen”.
