Untitled

I sit on a pier
the concrete is still warm from the day’s heat.

Surrounded by lovers
loners
fishermen.
All lured here by the promise of the ocean at sunset.

A crab does an eerie float across the breakwater
-is that what it’s called? the wall of puzzle pieces.
Spider walking crabs.

The fishermen are going out as a big container ship slowly eases into the harbour.
The slap and rush of water against the tinny concrete drowns out the boats’ diesel engines -a guttural chugging which contrasts the smooth, near silent movement of the ship. The little guy and the big guy.

A full, echoing boom of greeting as the huge ship slips into the channel, dwarfing the lighthouse and its hill.

A small tinkling of bells
The fisherman stands up and tends to his rod.

The water starts turning that Prussian blue of the abyss
with highlights of lemon sunshine yellow.
I like this light on a boat -noisily droning across the surface, hugging the shore, but far out enough to sense the danger of the depth and doubt the ocean’s benevolence.
After a long day of sunshine, aqua and pale blue
It’s a coming home time of day.
The promise of evening and a summer breeze.
Holiday days of doing only the best things.
