Rumour-mongers

Sweeping across the veranda the busy, bustling breeze
carries on flirtatious fingers
the scent of renewal,
and whispers a benediction
sent from a kindly God.

Butterflies, large and small, flitting by
on tissue-paper wings,
hear the rumour and carry it farther a-field.
Their flickering flight
sending silent signals skittering and skipping
over the cold country-side
still languishing in winters grip.

A collective sigh of hope
and anticipation mounts on high,
catching the tail feathers and wing tips
of darting pee-wees, willies and wrens;
Is carried aloft
on the back of the soaring wedge-tail,
who washes the pale, watery sky
to a brighter hue.

The sight of which shakes old Sol
from his seasonal depression.
He smiles, flexes his muscles,
radiating health and vitality.
He prods Gaia from her lair
cajoling her into taking a walk with him.

She dons a dress of the loveliest green,
dances across stark tree-tops
and strides through sere savannah grasses,
leaving in her wake
fragments of verdant fabric,
waving gaily;
Pennants to welcome
the stranger, the changer.
