Artist's Description

In terms of transport, I have a real soft spot for monorails. While their presence in modern cities is usually as a tourist attraction rather than a primary mode of mass-transit, their unusual nature and design makes them a highlight of any city which is lucky enough to host one.

The line depicted here, if the presence of the Space Needle doesn’t make it apparent, is the Seattle Center Monorail. The Seattle monorail is one of the only monorail systems in the United States and is probably the shortest; clocking in at a route length of only 0.96 miles with two stations.

The line opened in 1962 to coincide with the Worlds Fair which was held at the Seattle Center in October of that year. The line runs from the Center to downtown Seattle, terminating at the Westlake Center. The opening of the monorail was also done in conjunction with the magnificent Space Needle, once the tallest structure west of the Rockies and an immediate icon of the city.

Today, the monorail is simply used for tourist purposes and holds no real position as a form of rapid transit between the suburbs and the city; that being left up to Seattle’s extensive network of buses, trolleybuses and light rail. However, the tram is still a city icon and one can’t deny themselves a ride on this quirky little train.

I enjoyed a return trip on the monorail myself back in 1999 after visiting the Space Needle. We didn’t get off at Westlake, simply just rode it to one end and then came straight back. In fact, to my 7 year old mind, I was surprised how short the line was, expecting it to go on through the city when in fact it doesn’t even run a full mile.

The style I was going for here was a pseudo promotional artwork, harking back to the days of old railway advertisements where the train would be conveniently positioned against the backdrop of a famous landmark or scene.
