Artist's Description

The PATH train, the fastest way to get from Manhattan to New Jersey and back. Certainly a lot better than rotting for the rest of eternity in a traffic jam at the Holland Tunnel!

I was meant to go to a barbecue this evening, but the usual UK weather once again nipped that idea in the bud. So instead I chose to draw up this image of a PA1 train on the Port Authority Trans Hudson line, better known as the PATH.

The PA1 units were the first new trains to be put to work on the PATH service following its inauguration in 1962. The PA1’s were built by the St. Louis Car Company in 1964 and were used to replace the ageing 1909 stock which had been inherited from the previous operator of the railroad, the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad.

PA1’s plied their trade across the extensive network until 2011 when they were withdrawn and scrapped following the introduction of the latest PATH rolling stock, the PA5. All were scrapped bar an unlikely survivor; Car 143, which was dragged from the rubble of the collapsed World Trade Center, is now preserved at the Trolley Museum of New York.
