Artist's Description

It’s interesting to note that possibly the best tour of the UK is by our trains. With the advent of the Inter-City 125 that’s even more a possibility, due to the fact that you can have breakfast in Inverness, and dinner in London. No, I don’t intend to sound like an old British Rail advert, but it is true that whilst you travel the 581 mile journey to Inverness on the Highland Chieftain, or the 523 mile Northern Lights to Aberdeen, you see some of the most spectacular landmarks of the United Kingdom en route. The mountains of the Cairngorms, the Forth and Tay Bridges, Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Border Bridge, Newcastle, York Minster, Peterborough Cathedral, these are just some of the many things that this route entails, and can be seen from a single train ride.

This scene demonstrates one of those mighty landmarks, as in the 1980’s, an Inter-City Executive liveried Class 43 and it’s High Speed Train set can be seen ambling across the spectacular Forth Railway Bridge, completed in 1890, running parallel to the Forth Road Bridge of 1964, as it makes its way south towards the capitals of Scotland and England.
