Artist's Description

The scene depicts the evening Rush Hour at London Victoria station, where a Southeastern Class 465 prepares to depart for Gillingham.

Class 465’s were the last designs built by Metro-Cammell and BREL between 1991 and 1993 with construction continuing between 1993 and 1994 by Italian builder ABB Rail. 710 sets were intended for construction in order to replace some of the ageing 1950’s slam-door stock, primarily the Class 415 4EPB units. However, only 147 were eventually built. If 710 had been constructed it would have easily seen a premature end to all slam-door units such as the 4-CIG and the 4-VEP, these units living on until 2005 when they were replaced by a mixture of Electrostars and Desiros.

Identical in almost every way to the Class 365 units on the West Anglia Great Northern services, the difference is the fact that these units work on 750dc 3rd Rail instead of 25kv AC, although some Class 365’s were dual voltage for a time. Upon the breakup of Network Southeast, these units (as well as their Class 466 two-car counterparts) fell under the ownership of Connex South Eastern and then South Eastern Trains. Today, all units are operated by Southeastern and are primarily run on Metro services on the London Outer Suburban network, although some units will make an appearance in further flung parts of the Southern Region, including Ashford and Canterbury.
